Hand Therapy is the art and science of rehabilitation of the upper limb. In our clinic our Hand Therapist treats the hand, wrist and some elbow conditions such as tennis elbow. It involves evaluation and testing to assess the injured limb from which a specific treatment program can be designed. A variety of specialised treatment techniques are used to achieve these goals.
Problems treated by Hand Therapists can include trauma ( fractures, tendon or nerve lacerations, crush injuries), sprains, tendonitis, arthritis and nerve compressions such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
Hand Therapists are registered Occupational Therapists or Physiotherapists who, through further education, clinical experience and independent further study, have become proficient in the treatment of upper limb conditions resulting from injury or disease.
An Accredited Hand Therapist (AHT) is an AHPRA registered Occupational Therapist of Physiotherapist who has met the requirements as set by the Australian Hand Therapy Association. An AHT engages in ongoing education and remains current in their practice.
Hand Therapy at Newington Physiotherapy is provided by Ballarat Hand Therapy (Laura Shorney) and has been located within the clinic rooms of 1220 Mair St since 1999.
